This is profoundly true. Many people watch the news and think they understand how the news works. But you cannot understand the implicit and explicit decisions processes within a media organization—and they all have slightly different processes—without working inside that organization, or being the subject of its coverage. Just because you see a car, does not mean that you are a mechanic.
